El Clasico, Barcelona 3-3 Real Madrid

Magical Messi Earns Heroic Draw
A sensational Lionel Messi etched his name indelibly into the El Clasico history, as he completed an injury time hat-trick on the biggest stage in Spain to hand ten men Barcelona a gutsy draw at the Camp Nou, in one of the most breath-taking of El Clasicos.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, will go home gutted, and questions will be asked as to why Capello chose to sit back rather than finish off Frank Rijkaard's tiring charges.

Barcelona looked well on their way to their first home La Liga defeat this season until Messi produced a move of individual brilliance before finding the net with his left foot. Matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid, who were both knocked out of the Champions League in midweek, are never short of entertainment but there was more than the usual ration of drama on Saturday even before Messi's final contribution.

First Half:

It was a frentic start to the game, with Thuram's failed clearance falling at Ruud van Nistelrooy's feet in the 5th minute, and the Dutchman coolly finishing past Casillas from 20 yards out to silence the camp Nou crowd.

Barcelona were stunned, but recovered their composure to launch a fierce attempt to find the equalize.

Eto'o was denied by Casillas after a good move involving Ronaldinho and Messi, but the reward came in the 11th minute, after a superb pass from Ronaldinho found a bursting Messi, and Messi beat Casillas at the far post with consummate ease. It took Real Madrid all of two minutes to go back in the lead, with Oleguer clumsily leaving a leg out for Guti to fall over and earn a penalty. Van Nistelrooy calmly converted, to make it 2-1 for Los Merengues, barely 13 minutes into the game. Oleguer picked up a booking for his efforts - one that would later come to haunt Barcelona in other ways too.

Barca again laid siege on Real Madrid's goal, threatening through Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto'o, who were combining as superbly as ever. Ronaldinho was hacked from behind by Sergio Ramos, who made no attempt to play the ball, and was promptly handed a booking, and Eto'o was set up by Ronaldinho and Messi minutes later, but failed to get enough power into the shot.

You could feel, though, that a Barcelona goal was near, and it was once again Messi who grabbed it. However, Ronaldinho and Eto'o, who had both been superb over the last 20 minutes, were the ones who did the hard work. Ronaldinho ran into the six-yard box with the help of a one-two with Eto'o, and Madrid's attempt to deny him saw the ball fall to Messi, who hammered it into the net.

Xavi then sent Messi through with a superb pass almost immediately afterwards, and the Argentine put in a superb run, only to drag his finish into the side netting. It was all Barcelona, with Miguel Torres looking like a sitting duck against a rampant Lionel Messi.

Higuain then came close against the run of play, but it was Barcelona again immediately, with Deco finding Messi, Messi sending it wide to Ronaldinho, the Brazilian crossing superbly, but Salgado scrambling it clear inches ahead of Eto'o.

Eto'o then got past two defenders, but took one touch too many in the box, and was quickly crowded out just as he got ready to pull the trigger. Iniesta got in on the act, forcing another superb save from Casillas after another fabulous move from Barcelona.

However, tragedy struck for the Catalans on the stroke of half time, with Oleguer being sent off for a second yellow after bringing down Gago. That threatened to spoil the game though, With Diarra being booked for a shove on Messi, and and then Xavi also going into the book, as the referee seemed to be losing control of the game.

Thankfully, that was the final action of the half, allowing everyone to calm down. Four goals, one red card, and you could sense there could be more of both before the final whistle.

Second Half:

With Barca coach Frank Rijkaard having ambitiously opted to play a 3-4-3 formation from the outset, he was forced to shore up his defence at half time with Eto'o being replaced by the Brazilian defender Sylvinho.

Barcelona managed to slow the game down but inevitably they were going to leave gaps at the back.

Van Nistelrooy nearly got his third goal after 64 minutes when he was set free by Higuain but was thwarted by Valdes, who got an outstretched hand to the ball, but instead Sergio Ramos put them back in front.

The Spanish international defender got to a Guti free-kick but the ball spun backwards off his head and Ramos' expression clearly showed that it was a fluke.

In addition to Oleguer's dismissal nine other players were booked including Real's Malian midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, who misses next Sunday's game at home to Gimnastic Tarragona.

Real's fighting performance will probably be enough for their under-fire coach Fabio Capello to keep his job, at least for the moment.

After Real's midweek exit from Europe, the Spanish media had been speculating that only a win would save his neck but a draw under these circumstances will probably suffice despite them staying in fourth place.

The result temporarily returns Barca to the top of the Spanish first division but they will slip back to second if Sevilla get a point or more at relegation-threatened Gimnastic Tarragona on Sunday.

Champions League, Liverpool 0-1 Barcelona

Liverpool end Barça challenge

Liverpool FC withstood a late barrage by FC Barcelona to book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals as the 2005 winners ousted the holders on away goals, despite Eidur Gudjohnsen bringing the visitors a 1-0 victory at Anfield. With the aggregate scores level at 2-2, Liverpool's first-leg success proved decisive and kept the five-time champions dreaming of another triumph.

Given how successful Liverpool had been in unsettling their hosts in the Nou Camp, there was no surprise in Benitez deployment of the same line-up. Nor in the attacking intentions declared in Barcelona's 3-4-3 formation, spearheaded by the attacking trident of Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho.
Nearly quarter of an hour had elapsed however before Barca could translate those intentions into a movement of real menace, Iniesta's forward surge setting up a shooting opportunity for Deco, who was frustrated by Jamie Carragher's determined block on the edge of the area.

By the stage of Carragher's block Liverpool might easily have extended their first-leg advantage thanks to the energetic efforts of the first-leg match-winner John Arne Riise. Having already screwed one 20-yard effort narrowly wide of Victor Valdes' left-hand post, Riise hammered a second against the bar after selling his marker, Oleguer, a dummy that Ronaldinho would have been proud of.

There was another narrow escape for the Catalans in the 26th minute, goal-line blocks keeping out the follow-up efforts of Dirk Kuyt and Riise after Bellamy had got in behind Carles Puyol to force a good save from Valdes at his near post. But those let-offs were surpassed seven minutes later, when the Barcelona goalkeeper miscued a clearance from the edge of his area straight to Momo Sissoko.

From 35 yards out, Sissoko had the goal at his mercy but his lob was struck a fraction too firmly, the ball ending in the crowd via the top of the bar.

Another chance went begging within 60 seconds of the restart, Gerrard's pacy cross from the right dipping on to the six-yard line for Bellamy, who appeared to be caught by surprise at his good fortune and was unable to get the ball out from under his feet in time to get a shot away.

That miss and those that preceded it might have proved ruinously expensive if Ronaldinho had been able to convert the chance he generated from himself soon afterwards after collecting Deco's short pass on the edge of the area with his back to goal.

A wonderful 270-degree swivel was followed by a sidestep past Carragher but the Brazilian maestro could not quite complete what would have been a masterpiece of a goal, his sidefooted shot striking the inside of the post with Jose Reina well beaten.

That moment of genius apart, Liverpool rarely looked like being opened up until Gudjohnsen entered the fray. Gudjohnsen first meaningful involvement in the match saw him find just enough space in the inside left channel to collect Xavi's superbly judged pass before carrying the ball round Reina and prodding it into the net.

Sevilla 2-1 Barcelona, spanish League.

Sevilla Stun Barcelona In Potboiler Defending champions Barcelona surrendered a one-goal lead, missed a penalty and finished the game with nine men as they lost 2-1 at Sevilla on Saturday and were knocked off the top of the table. The result also meant the European champions head to Liverpool for their Champions League last 16 second leg clash, where they trail 2-1, in the worst possible mood.

Goals from Alexander Kerzhakov and Daniel Alves gave the Andalucians victory, while Aitor Ocio was sent off for the home team and Ludovic Giuly and Gianluca Zambrotta were dismissed for Barça. In a game that had a little of everything, the result has kept the race for the title wide open as Sevilla extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches in all competitions.

Barcelona had taken the lead after 14 minutes when Gianluca Zambrotta, who looked suspiciously offside, sprinted down the right-hand side and crossed for an unmarked Ronaldinho to head in his 17th goal of the season.
Ronaldinho had the chance to make it 2-0 on the half-hour mark when he was brought down in the area by Aitor Ocio. The Sevilla defender was sent-off but keeper Andres Palop saved the spotkick.

Sevilla, whose coach Juande Ramos was knocked out by a bottle thrown from the Real Betis crowd in a midweek Spanish Cup tie, shrugged off the loss of Ocio when Russian international Alexander Kerzhakov, a winter recruit, levelled with a sweet turn and shot six minutes before the break. Impressive Brazilian Dani Alves then hit what proved to be the winner in the 61st minute before Barca's night fell apart.

French midfielder Ludovic Giuly was red-carded for a 62nd-minute foul on Alves before Zambrotta was also ordered off in the 76th minute for a second yellow card. Even the introduction of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o from the bench in the 69th minute couldn't save Barcelona as Sevilla went top.

Spanish League, Barcelona 3-0 Athletic Bilbao. Match report and video highlights.

Barca back to their best at the Camp Nou, cruising to a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. A goal for Eto'o and a fantastic contribution from Ronaldinho were the basis for the victory, leaving Barca in a stronger position at the top of the league.
Barca not only won but also showed their class and dominance. And all that against one of the best teams away from home, Mane's Athletic Bilbao, and with 3 goals in the first 45 minutes. With Eto'o back in attack, Pujol and Thuram impeccable in defence, Iniesta in control of the midfield, Guily at his incisive best and an excellent Ronaldinho, Barca gave one of their best performances of the season. Barca made it clear in the first few minutes that they intended to get the ball out to the wings and use their speed. Guily was the best example trying to surprise the defence with every attack. With Eto'o on the pitch creating and closing down space, Bilbao's defence started to leave gaps which Barca did their best to take advantage of. It was however Yeste who got a first shot at goal in the 13th minute, showing that Bilbao were determined to make Barca sweat for the 3 points. Both defences looked pretty secure in the opening stages with Bilbao well organised, while Pujol and Thuram as centrebacks gave little option to the potentially dangerous Urzaia.

It was proving somewhat difficult for Barca to make clear chances on the goal defended by Aranzubia, and it wasn't until the 19th minute that Gio had a shot deflected wide. On 22 Guily skipped past Casa and his low cross was turned into his own net by Amorebieta under pressure from Eto'o, 1-0. Spurred on by the breakthrough, Xavi had a long shot stopped by Aranzubia a minute later, and then in the 29th minute converted an excellent Eto'o pass to make it 2-0.

As the game continued
Eto'o was gaining in confidence and increasingly looked like scoring. After a couple of failed attempts he broke the offside trap, latched onto a Ronaldinho pass and cooly took his time to slot a left footed shot past Aranzubia. After so many months anxious to see Eto'o score the Camp Nou celebrated as might be expected.

Bilbao brought on a forward Aduritz for a midfielder Murillo, Mané making it clear that he wasn't giving up the game. This created more space across the pitch and gave Barca even more opportunity to take advantage. Iniesta took over the midfield, moving between lines with ease. He might have scored the fourth after a wonderful move ended with his shot rebounding off the post back onto his left foot, only for him to shoot high when it seemed easier to score. Barca were 100% in control, Thuram and Puyol weren't giving anything away at the back either.

In the 59th minute Ronaldinho beat three players in a magical display of skill and from an impossibly tight angle chipped the ball over Aranzubia, only to see the keeper get a fingertip touch to the ball, enough to send it on to the bar. Fantastic stuff. Eto'o couldn't help but laugh and hold his head in his hands at the show of skill from his teammate. Soon after Eto'o was taken off to rapturous applause, replaced by Messi.

With the result no longer in doubt, Ronaldinho took over. Everytime the number 10 got the ball the crowd waited in expectation to see which trick he'd pull off. And he didn't disappoint. Treading in the ball, backheeling he left the defence in tatters. More good news for Barca when Sylvinho came on for Edmílson, his first outing after a month long injury. Gio moved into the middle and the Dutchman gave even more attacking options. The dying moments saw Barca cruise to victory, Ronaldinho and Messi showing what they can do and the Camp Nou enjoying every minute. Barca are back to their best.

Ronaldinho's Waistline!

Barcelona players defended their Brazilian international team-mate Ronaldinho on Friday against media allegations that he is under form this season because of his expanding waistline.

"I think he is fine. He has scored 16 goals in the league this season so I don't understand why there are complaints about his performance level," said Argentine striker Lionel Messi.

"As long as he plays well I don't think there is a problem with his weight," added his fellow Argentine striker Javier Saviola when asked about the issue at a news conference.

Ronaldinho did not train with the rest of his Barcelona team-mates on Friday opting instead to train in the gym, club officials said.

Earlier on Friday sports daily As published two contrasting photos of the bare-chested midfielder taken four years apart on its front page under the headline: "Ronaldinho loses his figure". The photo on the left depicted a muscular Ronaldinho and was taken after Barcelona draw against Real Sociedad in November 2003 while the one on the right, taken after Barca's Champions League loss to Liverpool on Wednesday, shows his more plump recent state.

The Catalan daily El Periodico published similar contrasting photos on its front page and blamed the 2004 and 2005 World Player of the Year recent slump in form on his weight gain.
"He has lost his explosiveness and velocity," it said in an article on the player and physical state, before adding the 26-year-old was "worn out".

An active social life, personal problems, too many advertising commitments and unhappiness over his contract still not being renewed beyond 2010 when it expires were all cited by the press as possible reasons for Ronaldinho's weight gain.

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard defended the player last month after As reported that the Catalan club were thinking of selling the Brazilian striker. "Ronaldinho is a key player. Ronaldinho is also part of the team and we have to look at that (issue) together," he said, referring to the player's recent under-performance.
"Leave us in peace to carry on working, I have confidence in everything he's done and I'm sure he will return to what he was," he added.

UEFA Champions League, Barcelona 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool taught Barcelona a Lesson!
This precious result was just one element in an astounding night for Liverpool. They had initially been outclassed in the delicate facets of the game but are now on the verge of knocking out the holders and entering the quarter-finals. Such was the transformation that they were a far sounder line-up by the end than psychologically fragile Barcelona, who conceded two hapless goals.

Rafael Benitez had got his tactics spot on, although for the first 20 minutes or so, Barcelona looked ominously in the mood. And in the 13th minute, Zambrotta broke on the left-wing and sent over an inch-perfect cross which Deco, having run untracked from midfield, embarrassed Riise with a powerful low header at the far post.

Liverpool's equaliser, two minutes before the break, came right out of th
e blue. Belletti was exposed as Bellamy met a deep free-kick at the back post with another low header. It was straight at Victor Valdes, but the keeper was behind his line and so, momentarily but decisively, was the ball. He scooped it out, but only to Dirk Kuyt, who smashed it back into the net. But the goal was clearly Bellamy's - and of course he celebrated by swinging an imaginary golf club.

Barcelona did get an invitation to regain the lead immediately before they fell behind, however. In the 73rd minute Javier Saviola wormed his way through and, when the ball ran free after being blocked by Reina, Messi seemed set to finish until Arbeloa got in the way of his effort. Moments later Gerrard fed Kuyt and, although the Dutchman miscontrolled, Valdés hesitated and Rafael Márquez inadvertently knocked the ball down to Bellamy, who squared for Riise to hit the net with a right-foot drive. In all the fundamentals of football competitiveness Liverpool had transformed themselves into the superior team for whom this conquest in Barcelona was only natural.

Liverpool earned a famous victory at Camp Nou - and Barca now have a real problem to solve at Anfield in two weeks' time.

If Barca Are In Crisis, We Are In Sheer Darkness - Casillas

Iker Casillas rubbished suggestions of a crisis at Barcelona, and suggested that it had just been exaggerated by the media.

"It - the Eto'o controversy - is something for the press to feast on, rather than good news for us," said Casillas during a press conference, when asked if Barcelona's problems could be good news for Real Madrid.

"A lot is being made of it, but the fact is that there are some problems in every single squad, and that's just how it is."

"If Barcelona are in crisis, then we are in sheer darkness. It is laughable to to even suggest that they are in a crisis."

"I think that the press simply exaggerated when they turned this whole thing into a big issue," he continued. "Dirty linen should never be washed in public, but maybe he [Eto'o] has his reasons to say it publicly. However, problems exist in every single squad."

Ronaldinho In Swipe At Eto’o

Barcelona’s Ronaldinho has criticised team-mate Samuel Eto’o after his refusal to come on as a substitute. Barca boss Frank Rijkaard wanted to give substitute Eto’o five minutes at the end of the game as he continues his comeback from a knee injury, but the Cameroon star did not want to play.

"Everything depends on the player and the particular situation, but it always is important to think about what's best for the team," said Ronaldinho.

Rijkaard himself revealed: "Eto'o was warming up (in the 69th minute), but later when it came to putting him on, he did not want to go. It is a pity, but I still have not been able to speak with him and I do not know the cause of his decision."

It is being reported that Eto'o had been told he would play for half-an-hour and by the end of the match he did not want to come on at all. Eto'o will now meet with Rijkaard in training to resolve the situation.

Question Of The Day: Where Will Cristiano Ronaldo Be Playing In Six Months?

After the World Cup finals you would have got long odds on Cristiano Ronaldo still being at Manchester United at the moment as he seemed to have alienated himself from the majority of football supporters in England and even his team-mate Wayne Rooney.

However, the booing from the stands has had no negative effect, but has in fact inspired the Portuguese star, who is surely the best player in the Premiership, if not the World, at the moment. He is leading his side towards the Premiership title and understandably they are doing everything in their power to keep him at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo is being targeted by Real Madrid and Barcelona if you believe the newspaper speculation, while his national boss has apparently urged him to move to Spain. However, it is hard to know what the player actually wants to do this summer.

What ever he decides it goes without saying that he'll be a very wealthy young man and if he does move he could well become the most expensive player to ever be bought or sold by an English club.

Barcelona 3-0 Gimnastic

Barcelona returned to the top of the table and claimed the title of 'winter champions' after defeating Gimnastic 3-0 in a game with relatively few scoring chances. Goals from Saviola, Giuly and Iniesta sealed a hard earned victory.

It was a slow first half from Barca though, with Gimnastic showing a lot of courage at the Camp Nou, and more than holding their own at various points as Barca stood stuck in second gear. It was left to the red hot Javier Saviola to rescue them, and he did with just 17 minutes gone, when Oleguer's mis-hit shot fell to him. The Argentine took one quick touch, and crashed it past Bizzarri to score his seventh goal in four games.

In the minute 65 Rikjaard substituted Saviola and brought on Eidur Gudjohsen. The substitute Gudjohnsen proved decisive with his contribution to Barca's second goal. In the 67 minute, a good cross from Ronaldinho from the right wing was met by Gudjonhsons' head and just when the Camp Nou was about to celebrate another goal, ex-barca player Mingo somehow managed to push the ball onto the cross bar, only for it to fall at the feet of Ludovic Giuly who made no mistake to score the second goal of the night.

The third goal came with Ronaldinho once again the architect, and Gudjohnsen once again contributing. The Brazilian ran towards the goal, helped by a neat one-two with Gudjohnsen. The keeper just about got his hands to it, but Iniesta was at hand to finish with aplomb. 3-0 with ten minutes to go, and Barcelona were in complete control.

Barcelona 'Free' Belletti For Four Year Milan Deal;

Barcelona will hand Juliano Belletti a letter of freedom, armed with which, the Brazilian will sign a four year deal with Milan. Belletti was set to leave the Nou Camp last summer, but his Champions League winner prompted Barcelona to hang on to him.

Belletti has seen little action this season following the arrival of Zambrotta, and AC Milan's interest had him in two minds. He had another 18 months to run on his contract, but reports coming out of Barcelona suggest that his agent has negotiated a four-year deal with Milan, and that the Catalans will hand him a letter of freedom, thus allowing him to move to Serie A this month.

Internacional make it big in Japan, Brazilian football notched up another major achievement when SC Internacional of Porto Alegre overcame Spain's FC Barcelona to win the FIFA World Club Cup Japan 2006. In the process, Inter became the third Brazilian side to taste success in the competition after Corinthians in 2000 and Sao Paulo in 2005.

Here's the match's highlights and goals:

Saturday, December 16, 2006

Samuel Eto'o Fils (born March 10, 1981 in Nkon, Cameroon) is a footballer, who currently plays for FC Barcelona. He is a distinguished forward who is known for his outstanding positional awareness and shooting technique. His talents have made him a leading scorer for both club and country and one of the world's top strikers. He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2003, 2004, and 2005, making him the first player to win the award three years in succession since it has been handed out by the Confederation of African Football. He was recently named as one of the strikers for the FIFPro World XI team for the second consecutive year. He was born and raised in Douala ,Cameroon.

Club career:
During his time with RCD Mallorca, he became the highest ever league goal scorer in the history of the club, with 54 goals. He signed for FC Barcelona in the summer of 2004 for a transfer fee of 24 million after a long series of three-way negotiations with Mallorca and Real Madrid. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez said that Eto'o was not needed as they already had Ronaldo and Raúl signed as strikers. Eto'o made his debut for Barcelona in the first game of the season at Ràcing Santander, on August 29, 2004.

During Barcelona's Champions League match against Werder Bremen on September 27, 2006, he ruptured the meniscus in his right knee. Ricard Pruna, Barcelona's doctor, originally estimated that the injury would keep him out of action for two to three months.[1] However, after an operation to treat the damaged meniscus, Barcelona doctors upped the estimated recovery time to five months.

Eto’o’s 5 months absence is major blow for FC Barcelona as he is one of their most influential players. Though he will miss more than 20 matches, Joan Laporta still believes he can retain his title of "Pichichi". Eto’o himself says that he will be playing again before the five month period. Less than one month after his operation, Eto'o has been spotted in ValenciaGP, during the MotoGP, walking without crutches. Eto'o is surprising everyone with his fast progress, even after being asked not to watch Barca playing on TV.
